This page is a relocation summary written by an advanced AI

It is not a personal opinion piece written by a human. An AI gathered official information published on the internet — municipal and national statistics, the Japan Meteorological Agency, railway companies, property portals — and rebuilt it into a form that someone considering a move can read and act on. Every figure carries a source link and the date it was checked, so please confirm anything that matters to you against the original document. Rules and prices change. CHAPTER 01First, what kind of place Kurashiki is

A city of 356.07 square kilometres facing the Seto Inland Sea, in the south of Okayama Prefecture. The houses on the market run from minus 0.5 metres to 132.6 metres in elevation, with a median of 2.8 metres. Much of what is now flat land was made by land reclamation and new paddy development from the Edo period onward — and that is the first thing to understand about this city.

Living on what used to be seaThe city’s history says this — “when sea levels were at their highest, some six thousand years ago, seawater reached deep into what is now the plain; a long, narrow inland sea connected to the Seto Inland Sea stretched east to west around the northern half of the present city area, with Kojima closing it off to the south”. From Tensho 10 (1582) Ukita Hideie built the Ukita embankment to keep the seawater of Kojima Bay out, and between the Genna (1615–1624) and Kanbun (1661–1673) eras the islands around Kurashiki and Tamashima became joined to the land. The ground the city hall stands on is likewise “reclaimed land” (§5). The plain you see today was made by people.
Three cities merged to make today’s KurashikiOn 1 February Showa 42 (1967) the 3 former cities of Kurashiki, Kojima and Tamashima merged to create the present Kurashiki City. Sho Village and Chaya-machi followed in Showa 46 and 47, and Funao Town and Mabi Town in August Heisei 17 (2005). So the city has 6 districts — Kurashiki, Mizushima, Kojima, Tamashima, Funao and Mabi — and it publishes its population statistics by these 6 as well (§2 and §10). That is why “living in Kurashiki” means completely different things depending on which of the old towns you mean.
Cotton, salt, textiles, heavy chemicals — how this place earns its living has changed again and againIn the city’s account, the south of Bitchu province in the Edo period was busy with cash crops such as cotton and rapeseed, and in Enkyo 3 (1746) the shogunate placed a magistrate’s office in Kurashiki village. Tamashima harbour flourished shipping ginned cotton and traded with the kitamae-bune of Kyushu and Hokuriku. In Kojima, Nozaki Buzaemon opened vast salt fields and was called the “salt-field king”, and from the late Edo period kokura, sanada and unsai cloth were woven here, the forerunners of today’s Kojima textile industry. In Meiji 22 Ohara Koshiro and others opened the Kurashiki Spinning Mill, and in Showa 16 Mitsubishi Heavy Industries began building an aircraft works on the abandoned bed of the Takahashigawa — which is when this area came to be called Mizushima. With the factory recruitment drive from the Showa 30s, the Mizushima coastal belt became a heavy chemical industrial zone.

You can zoom and pan. The marker is Kurashiki City Hall. The Takahashigawa runs south through the middle; east of it is Kurashiki, west of the river mouth is Tamashima, along the coast to the south is the Mizushima industrial belt, and the peninsula jutting further south is Kojima (with Shimotsui and the Seto Ohashi bridge at its tip). Inland to the north-west is Mabi, and the west bank of the Takahashigawa is Funao.

What should I know first about moving to Kurashiki?

469,077 people in a city of 356.07 square kilometres facing the Seto Inland Sea. 🔴 Much of the present plain was made by land reclamation and new paddy development, and the ground the city hall stands on is reclaimed land too. It was formed when the 3 cities of Kurashiki, Kojima and Tamashima merged in Showa 42.

CHAPTER 02Six areas, and life in each

These 6 are the district divisions Kurashiki itself uses in its population statistics (Kurashiki, Mizushima, Kojima, Tamashima, Funao and Mabi). Sorting all 753 houses on the market by town name, the medians run from ¥8,700,000 (Mabi) to ¥23,000,000 (Kurashiki), and the median plot from 175 to 233 square metres. In every district the plot is over 175 square metres.

Kurashiki (the Bikan district, Nakasho, Chaya-machi) — the most houses, and the greatest range of height335 houses (¥3,500,000–¥295,000,000, median ¥23,000,000, 44 at or under ¥10,000,000). At 0.5–132.6 m (median 3.1 m) it has the widest range of the 6 districts. The nearest stations are Kurashiki 95, Nishi-Achi 50, Nakasho 41, Chaya-machi 35. Median plot 178 m². 44% of the city’s houses on the market are in this belt.
Who it suits = anyone who wants to live within walking distance of the Bikan district and Kurashiki Station, or to commute to Okayama on the Seto-Ohashi Line from Chaya-machi
What to watch = 92 of the 335 (27%) date from 1981 or earlier. Allow for the cost of a seismic survey from the start
Tamashima (Shin-Kurashiki, Kurosaki, Nagao) — where a large plot is most within reach106 houses (¥10,000–¥42,800,000, median ¥14,240,000, 41 at or under ¥10,000,000 = 39%). Elevation minus 0.5 to 35.2 m (median 2.2 m). The nearest stations are Shin-Kurashiki 71, Konko 28. The median plot is 224 m², a roomy belt.
Who it suits = anyone using Shin-Kurashiki Station (where the Sanyo Shinkansen stops), or wanting a large plot cheaply
What to watch = 52 of the 106 (49%) date from 1981 or earlier, and some properties sit at minus 0.5 metres. Look at every one of the flood, storm-surge and tsunami maps (§5)
Kojima (Shimotsui, Ajino, Kotoura) — the sea, the hills, and jeans100 houses (¥900,000–¥70,000,000, median ¥15,250,000, 34 at or under ¥10,000,000). At 1.5–76.4 m (median 15.7 m) the houses stand higher than in any of the other 5 districts. The nearest stations are Kaminocho 49, Kojima 24, Kimi 8. The median plot is 213 m² and the median building 125 m², the largest buildings of the 6.
Who it suits = anyone looking for a sea view at the foot of the Seto Ohashi bridge, or who likes the air of the birthplace of Japanese-made jeans (§13)
What to watch = it is a hilly belt. Walk your everyday shopping and hospital routes yourself before you decide
Mizushima (Tsurajima, Fukuda, the coastal industrial belt) — work is right there178 houses (¥2,900,000–¥67,900,000, median ¥22,990,000, 23 at or under ¥10,000,000). At minus 0.3 to 65.1 m (median 1.1 m) it is the lowest-lying of the 6. The nearest stations are Yayoi 46, Tokiwa 27, Sakae 22, Urada 21 (the Mizushima Rinkai Railway). The median year built is 2008, far newer than any of the other 5.
Who it suits = anyone working in the Mizushima industrial complex, or wanting the shortest possible commute
What to watch = it is at about sea level. Look at the storm-surge and tsunami hazard maps (§5) first
Mabi (home of Kibi no Makibi) — the belt getting back on its feet after the heavy rain of July 201821 houses (¥2,400,000–¥26,800,000, median ¥8,700,000, the cheapest of the 6, 13 at or under ¥10,000,000 = 62%). Elevation 10.7–50.8 m (median 24.0 m). The nearest stations are Kawabejuku 9, Kibi-Makibi 6, Nishi-Achi 4. Median plot 231 m².
What to watch = this district was badly damaged by the heavy rain of July Heisei 30 (2018). The city has a Mabi district recovery plan and is carrying out the Mabi emergency flood control project. Check on the city’s recovery pages how far each part has got before you look (§5)
Funao (the west bank of the Takahashigawa) — the largest plots13 houses (¥1,000,000–¥30,000,000, median ¥17,800,000, 3 at or under ¥10,000,000). Elevation 1.1–19.5 m (median 3.6 m). The nearest stations are Nishi-Achi 7, Shin-Kurashiki 4. The median plot is 233 m² (about 70 tsubo), the roomiest of the 6.
Who it suits = anyone looking for a house with a field
What to watch = only 13 come up. You will have to look on the assumption of waiting

Which part of Kurashiki should I live in?

The city divides into the 6 districts it uses in its population statistics — Kurashiki, Mizushima, Kojima, Tamashima, Funao and Mabi. The medians run from ¥8,700,000 in Mabi to ¥23,000,000 in Kurashiki, and the median plot from 175 to 233 square metres.

CHAPTER 03Trains and cars — how you get around

Kurashiki to Okayama is 19 minutes and ¥330, with 0 changes. The Sanyo Shinkansen stops at Shin-Kurashiki (1 hr 9 min to Shin-Osaka). The city carries the JR Sanyo Main Line, the Hakubi Line, the Seto-Ohashi Line (the Honshi-Bisan Line) and the Mizushima Rinkai Railway, and from Kojima the Seto Ohashi bridge carries you to Shikoku.

SectionTimeFareChanges
Kurashiki → Okayama19 min¥3300
Shin-Kurashiki → Shin-Osaka (Shinkansen)1 hr 9 min¥7,9901
Kurashiki → Hiroshima1 hr 2 min¥6,7901

These are the results of a search on JR West’s official timetable for a departure at 8:00 on 20 August 2026 (adult, one way; Shinkansen fares are for a reserved seat in the ordinary season). Shin-Kurashiki to Shin-Osaka means taking a “Hikari” 10 minutes to Okayama and changing there for Shin-Osaka (201.7 route km; ticket ¥3,740 plus reserved seat ¥4,250). The journey time and fare from Kojima to Takamatsu are not given on this page — the JR Shikoku section could not be read on JR West’s search, and we do not write from guesswork.

This is a city with a Shinkansen stationThe Sanyo Shinkansen stops at Shin-Kurashiki Station. Of the 106 houses on the market in the Tamashima district, 71 have Shin-Kurashiki as their nearest station (§2), with a median of ¥14,240,000. A house on a 224 m² plot at that price, within walking distance of a Shinkansen station — that is not a common combination among the places covered on this site. From Kurashiki Station, Okayama is 19 minutes away, and from Okayama the Sanyo Shinkansen and limited expresses run in every direction. From Kojima the Seto-Ohashi Line runs straight across to Shikokuthis is the only city on the Honshu side connected to Shikoku by rail. For times and fares please check JR Shikoku’s official search.
It is also very much a car cityThe Sanyo Expressway (Kurashiki and Tamashima interchanges) and the Seto-Chuo Expressway (from Hayashima through Kojima and on to Shikoku) run through it, and Mizushima Port is a designated international bulk strategic port. The 6 districts are spread widely across the city (356.07 km², §1), so take it that moving between districts assumes a car. The Mizushima Rinkai Railway (Kurashiki-shi to Mitsubishi-Jiko-mae) is the commuting line for the Mizushima district, and it appears among the nearest stations too, with Yayoi 9, Urada 6 and Sakae 3 (§2).

How to read this list

The space is real. Do not expect newnessThe median plot of 183 m² (about 55 tsubo) is roughly twice that of the towns within an hour of Osaka on this site (Suita 83 m², Amagasaki 75 m², Toyonaka 100 m²). The buildings are 110 m² as well. And the median is ¥20,000,000. But 234 (31%) date from 1981 or earlier1 house in 3 predates the current earthquake code. This is also a place where the chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years is 38.3% (§5). Make getting a seismic survey and a quotation for the work your first step in this city. It also gives you grounds for negotiating on price.
Sorting shows you the character of each districtThis list carries an elevation for every property. Sort by lowest elevation and Mizushima and Tamashima come to the top; sort by highest and Kojima and Mabi do (§2). Sort by elevation first, make sure which district you are looking at, and then look at the prices. There is even a property at ¥10,000 (Tamashima Kashiwajima, built 1963), but what makes it cheap is the age of the building and the cost of demolition or renovation. If you want a house you can move straight into, narrowing by year built first is the quicker route.

And this is a city whose Mabi district was badly damaged by the heavy rain of July Heisei 30 (2018).

Is this town inside a national earthquake-preparedness zone?

For each major earthquake, national law designates the areas where preparation is to be advanced. Whether a town is designated tells you directly how the national government views the shaking and tsunami expected there.

The heavy rain of July 2018, and Mabi today

Kurashiki City still keeps pages on the heavy rain of July Heisei 30 and the typhoon disaster of Heisei 16 published as “a record of recent disasters in Kurashiki City”. For the Mabi district, the city has drawn up a “Mabi district recovery plan” and a “Mabi district recovery vision”, set up a recovery plan promotion committee, and continues to publish “Mabi Fukko Dayori”. On flood control itself, the “Mabi emergency flood control project” is under way. If you are considering a house in the Mabi district, open these recovery pages first. They set out, in the city’s own words, not only what happened but what has been built since. Looking at the price without reading that is the wrong way round in this district.

Kurashiki City has 5 kinds of hazard map

Flood and landslide hazard mapFlooding of the Takahashigawa and other rivers, and the areas at risk of landslides. This is the sheet if you are looking at Mabi, Kojima or Funao
Storm-surge hazard mapProjected inundation when the tide rises in a typhoon or the like. Much of the city is low ground made by reclamation (§1)
Tsunami hazard mapTsunami from a great Nankai Trough earthquake. Essential if you are considering the coast at Mizushima, Tamashima or Kojima
Inland-flooding hazard mapFlooding from rain heavy enough to exceed the drainage capacity of the sewers
Irrigation pond hazard mapThe area that would flood if an irrigation pond gave way. Look at this when you are considering the foot of a hill

What this number means, and what you do next

The shaking figure is for a city hall built on reclaimed landThe chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years is 38.3%, and the ground is reclaimed land with AVS30 236.34 m/s. But this is the value for a single cell under the city hall, and the houses on the market in the city run from minus 0.5 metres to 132.6 metres (§2). Do not read it as a figure for the city as a whole. You can see it lot by lot on J-SHIS. Since 31% of the houses date from 1981 or earlier (§4), the earthquake resistance of the building and the ground under it have to be checked together.
Two things to look at first1. Put your address into the overlaid hazard map and view flood, inland flooding, storm surge, tsunami and landslide together. 2. Open all 5 kinds in turn on Kurashiki City’s hazard map page. The city also runs the Kurashiki disaster preparedness portal, which gathers evacuation and weather information. For the Mabi district, add the recovery pages above without fail.

Is the disaster risk high in Kurashiki?

The city is designated a Nankai Trough earthquake disaster prevention promotion area, and at the city hall site the chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years is 38.3% and of 6-upper or above 5.8% (reclaimed land, AVS30 236.34 m/s). 🔴 The Mabi district was badly damaged by the heavy rain of July Heisei 30, and the city is carrying out a Mabi district recovery plan and the Mabi emergency flood control project.

The winter mornings are properly coldThere are 39.6 days below freezing a year — more than a month of mornings when the low drops below 0°C (more than Tokyo). The January daily low is 0.3°C. CHAPTER 07Shops, hospitals, schools

From July Reiwa 5, children’s medical care became free, inpatient and outpatient alike, to the end of lower secondary school. For emergencies, the Kurashiki City Holiday and Night Emergency Centre (internal medicine and paediatrics) covers 20:00 to 22:00 every night and daytimes on holidays. The schools are 61 municipal primary and compulsory-education schools (24,146 pupils) and 26 lower secondary and compulsory-education schools (12,410 pupils).

Children’s medical care is free to the end of lower secondary school

From treatment received in July Reiwa 5 (2023), Kurashiki City widened children’s medical cost support to lower secondary pupils for both inpatient and outpatient care, and made it free. In the city’s account, before the change (up to treatment received in June Reiwa 5) outpatient care ran to the end of primary school and inpatient care to the end of lower secondary school; after it, both run to the end of lower secondary school (to the first 31 March after a child turns 15). With a My Number card you can apply online, 24 hours a day (new applications, replacement cards and notifications of change).

CHAPTER 08What it costs you every year after you buy

On the city’s tariff table, water and sewerage come to ¥11,251 including tax for 40 cubic metres over 2 months (water ¥5,317 plus sewerage ¥5,934). For 20 cubic metres over 2 months it is ¥5,165. That is at the higher end of the places covered on this site, and we say so plainly.

Use over two monthsWater chargeSewerage chargeTotal (tax included)
20㎥¥2,391¥2,774¥5,165
30㎥¥3,854¥4,354¥8,208
40㎥¥5,317¥5,934¥11,251

These are the relevant rows exactly as given, from the city’s published “water and sewerage tariff table (usage period: 2 months; use: general; including tax)”, for meter readings from March Reiwa 8. For comparison, the same 40 cubic metres over 2 months costs ¥8,533 in Amagasaki, ¥8,630 in Suita and ¥9,110 in Nishinomiya.

31% of the houses date from 1981 or earlierOf the 753, 234 (31%) date from 1981 or earlier (§4). This is a place where the chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years is 38.3% (§5). Much of the cheapness comes from exactly this. If you plan to buy and then repair, get a seismic survey and a quotation for the work before you sign. With a median plot of 183 m² and building of 110 m² (§4), the area to be worked on is correspondingly large. Budgeting as “price plus renovation” is the realistic way to buy in this city.
Take a car as more or less given6 districts across 356.07 km² (§1). The JR Sanyo Main Line, the Hakubi Line, the Seto-Ohashi Line and the Mizushima Rinkai Railway all run here, but moving between districts and doing the everyday shopping assume a car. In exchange, a median plot of 183 m² (§4) means a house with parking is the norm. With 1,042.2 mm of rain a year (§6) and 0.0 days below freezing all day, you need no winter tyres and no snow shovel. There are 39.6 days below freezing a year, though, so be ready for frozen mornings.

CHAPTER 09What happens when you want to sell

In the Reiwa 8 published land prices, residential land in Kurashiki averages ¥51,300/m², up 1.1% on the year. Commercial land is ¥90,700/m² (+2.0%), industrial land ¥27,700/m² (+2.9%) and all uses ¥58,500/m² (+1.4%). All 4 are up.

UseAverage priceYear-on-year change
Residential¥51,300/m²+1.1%
Commercial land¥90,700/m²+2.0%
Industrial land¥27,700/m²+2.9%
All uses¥58,500/m²+1.4%
This is why the plots are largeThe residential average of ¥51,300/m² is about a sixth of Nishinomiya City (¥293,500/m²), a fifth of Suita City (¥242,100/m²) and a quarter of Amagasaki City (¥206,600/m²). Even a 60-tsubo plot (198 m²) costs about ¥10,200,000 for the land. That is why the median plot runs to 183 m² (§4). The same budget buys 3 times the land of a metropolitan area — that is this city’s first condition.
They are rising, but gentlyResidential land +1.1%, commercial land +2.0%. Against the towns within an hour of Osaka (residential land +2.7% to +4.9%), the movement is mild. With 753 houses on the market (§4) it is a market with plenty of buyers and sellers, but it is not a place to buy expecting prices to rise. If living on a large plot is itself the point, that mildness is an advantage. The medians by district run from ¥8,700,000 (Mabi) to ¥23,000,000 (Kurashiki) (§2).

CHAPTER 11Community life and the year's events

The year in Kurashiki is the Bikan district, the sea, and each district’s own festivals. Because the city divides into 6 districts (§2), the events stand separately by district too.

WhenEvent, and what you can doWhere
All yearThe Kurashiki Bikan district. In the Edo period it became land held directly by the shogunate (tenryo), a magistrate’s office was placed here in Enkyo 3 (1746), and “the houses of many great landowners and wealthy merchants came to stand side by side” (from the city’s history)Kurashiki district
All yearThe Ohara Museum of Art. At the heart of what Ohara Magosaburo, president of Kurashiki Spinning, did in “leaving a deep mark on the culture and welfare of the area” (from the city’s history)Kurashiki district
All yearKojima’s jeans. The city’s history writes that “in Kojima, kokura, sanada and unsai cloth were woven from the late Edo period, the forerunners of today’s Kojima textile industry”Kojima district
All yearShimotsui and the Seto Ohashi bridge. The tip of Kojima is the foot of the bridge that crosses from Honshu to Shikoku (§3)Kojima district
All yearThe home of Kibi no Makibi. The city’s history writes that “Kibi no Makibi, who was active at the centre of national politics in the Nara period, came from the Shimotsumichi clan, one of the most powerful of the Kibi chieftains”. There is a JR station named after himMabi district
Each of the 6 districts has its own shape of neighbourly lifeThis is a city where 3 cities merged in Showa 42 and Mabi Town and Funao Town joined in Heisei 17 (§1). The scales differ too, from 230,479 in Kurashiki to 8,198 in Funao (§10), and how the residents’ associations came about and how much the local events ask of you differ by district. Before you buy, ask the association officers directly about the dues and the duty roster for that district. In a market where the median plot is 183 m² (§4) in particular, duties that do not exist in a city — cutting the grass, taking a turn on the watercourse — can come round to you.
For the Mabi district, ask the people who live thereThe Mabi district was badly damaged by the heavy rain of July Heisei 30, and recovery is under way (§5). The city continues to publish “Mabi Fukko Dayori” and holds commemorative recovery events. If you are house-hunting in this district, listen to the people who live there before you look at prices or floor plans. And read the city’s recovery pages. That, we think, is the most honest way in.

The pillars of the year are the Bikan district (the streetscape of the Edo-period shogunal land and magistrate’s office), the Ohara Museum of Art, Kojima’s jeans (with kokura, sanada and unsai of the late Edo period as their forerunners) and Shimotsui and the Seto Ohashi bridge. 🔴 In the Mabi district, “Mabi Fukko Dayori” and the commemorative recovery events continue.

CHAPTER 12Things nearby that move land prices

Three things set prices in Kurashiki: 1. the heavy chemical industry at Mizushima; 2. a Shinkansen station and 19 minutes to Okayama; and 3. a wide plain made by reclamation. Residential land averages ¥51,300/m² (+1.1%) and industrial land is +2.9%.

1. The work is inside the cityThe Mizushima coastal industrial belt — the belt of which the city’s history writes that “with the factory recruitment drive from the Showa 30s, the Mizushima coastal belt drew attention as a heavy chemical industrial zone” (§1). 86,430 people live in the Mizushima district (§10), and the Mizushima Rinkai Railway is how they commute (§3). Having the work inside the city means you do not have to choose where to live by commuting time. That is a fundamentally different condition from a city in a metropolitan area.
2. A Shinkansen station, and 19 minutes to OkayamaThe Sanyo Shinkansen stops at Shin-Kurashiki, putting Shin-Osaka 1 hr 9 min away. Kurashiki to Okayama is 19 minutes and ¥330, and from Kojima the Seto-Ohashi Line crosses to Shikoku (§3). The Tamashima district has a median of ¥14,240,000 on a 224 m² plot (§2) — and that is within walking distance of a Shinkansen station. For anyone who travels often by Shinkansen for work, the value for money here is among the best on this site.
3. The plain is wide, so the plots are wideMuch of the present plain was made by land reclamation and new paddy development (§1). That is how it became a city of 356.07 km² at 1,317 people per km² (§10), with room to spare. Residential land at ¥51,300/m² (§9) and a median plot of 183 m² (§4). The other side of it is that the city hall stands on reclaimed land, the chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years is 38.3%, and you need the storm-surge and tsunami maps (§5). The space and the ground come from the same cause.
Sources: land prices from the same official land price survey as §9 (Reiwa 8) / journey times and fares as in §3 from JR West official timetable / the description of the industrial belt is fromKurashiki City, “History of the city”/ plot sizes and counts from the same SUUMO tally as §4 / checked 2026-08-19

What this land earns from

Kurashiki is a place that has changed how it earns its living again and again. Cotton and rapeseed (the cash crops of the Edo period), salt (Nozaki Buzaemon of Kojima, the “salt-field king”), a ginned-cotton harbour (Tamashima and the kitamae-bune), spinning (the Kurashiki Spinning Mill of Meiji 22), aircraft (Showa 16, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the birth of the name Mizushima), and then heavy chemicals (the Mizushima coastal industrial belt from the Showa 30s) — every step of it is set out in the city’s own history. And Kojima’s textile industry runs from the kokura, sanada and unsai of the late Edo period through to Japanese-made jeans. The white walls of the Bikan district are the wealth of the cotton and shogunal-land era given form. What is seen today as tourism is the trace of yesterday’s industry.

What decides land prices in Kurashiki?

Three things: 1. the heavy chemical industry at Mizushima; 2. a Shinkansen station and 19 minutes to Okayama; and 3. a wide plain made by reclamation. Residential land is ¥51,300/m² (+1.1%) and industrial land +2.9%.

CHAPTER 13What this place makes

What a place earns its living from shows up both at your dinner table and in your work once you live there. The amount raised through the hometown tax scheme is a rough measure of how many products a place has that people all over Japan choose.

¥814,710,000
Hometown tax donations received in FY Reiwa 7 (22,132 donations).
406th of 1,788 municipalities nationwide, and 5th within Okayama Prefecture

We have not yet been able to describe this place's local specialities

I (the AI) searched Kurashiki City’s official website and the tourism and produce association sites the municipality points to, but could not find an officially published list of local specialities (checked 20 August 2026).
This site is built by checking sources one at a time, so that an AI does not go and present something that is not true. Because no sourced information could be found, nothing is listed yet. It does not mean there are no local specialities, and we ask for your understanding.

If you would like this filled in,please tell us the official page . We will put it here with a source and the date it was checked.

You can support a town without living there

Even if a move is still some way off, you can be involved from today through the hometown tax scheme. Your donation goes straight to the municipality, and you choose what it is spent on. A way to give something back to a place you got to know here.

What does Kurashiki earn its living from?

A place that has changed how it earns its living again and again. Cotton and rapeseed → salt (Kojima’s “salt-field king”) → a ginned-cotton harbour (Tamashima and the kitamae-bune) → spinning (the Kurashiki Spinning Mill of Meiji 22) → aircraft (Showa 16, the origin of the name Mizushima) → heavy chemicals. Kojima’s textiles run on into Japanese-made jeans.

CHAPTER 14A message from Kurashiki City

Kurashiki City is a core city of 470,000 people. Rather than drawing people in with relocation grants, its foundation is what is there once you live here — medical care free to the end of lower secondary school, an emergency centre open every night, 61 primary schools.

What the city writes about itself

The city ends its history like this — “with the factory recruitment drive from the Showa 30s, the Mizushima coastal belt drew attention as a heavy chemical industrial zone, and for the sake of regional development the 3 former cities of Kurashiki, Kojima and Tamashima merged on 1 February Showa 42, at which point the present Kurashiki City was newly born. Sho Village and Chaya-machi were merged in Showa 46 and 47 in turn, and in August Heisei 17 (2005) Funao Town and Mabi Town, so that it continues to develop as a hub city of the eastern Seto region in name and in substance”. “A hub city of the eastern Seto region” — that is the phrase this city gives itself. And it still keeps the page on the heavy rain of July Heisei 30 published as “a record of recent disasters in Kurashiki City”. Keeping what happened on the record, and continuing to publish how the recovery is going — that too, we think, is this city’s stance.

Does Kurashiki welcome people moving in? Is there any support?

It is a core city of 470,000, and its foundation is what is there once you live here: children’s medical care free to the end of lower secondary school, an emergency centre open every night, 61 primary schools. 🔴 No vacant-home bank could be found (checked 2026-08-19).

7–month 8The wettest (July 154.1 mm) and the hottest time. The mean daily high is 32.2°C, but there are only 4.1 days a year above 35°C, much like Tokyo. The emergency centre opens 20:00–22:00 every night
9–month 10Typhoon season. This is the time to look at the storm-surge hazard map (§5). It is also when the clear days return and the Seto Inland Sea looks its best
11–month 12Towards the year’s end. Rainfall is low — 51.2 mm in November and 40.4 mm in December — and outdoor work is easy. The emergency centre opens in the daytime from 30 December to 3 January as well

The information on this site is gathered by an AI that visits primary sources — municipalities, the Japan Meteorological Agency, national statistics — on a regular cycle, and it is updated with a source and a date of verification attached.

What is a year in Kurashiki like?

The year opens with 34.4 mm of rain in January, and with 0.0 days below freezing all day you need no preparation for snow. There are 39.6 days below freezing a year, though, so the mornings freeze. There are only 4.1 days a year above 35°C, much like Tokyo. Sunshine is what marks the whole year.

CHAPTER 16The people who run this city

When you are thinking of moving, who is running this city now, and where they are taking it, is something people about to live here want to know even more than those already living here. This chapter sets out, with sources, only what Kurashiki City publishes itself. 🔴 As of 22 August 2026, following the official site, I (the AI) could find 4 of the 6 items below. The mayor of Kurashiki City is Ito Kaori (confirmed on the city’s introduction page).

Who runs Kurashiki City now?

The mayor of Kurashiki City is Ito Kaori (confirmed on the city’s introduction page on 22 August 2026). What this site looks for is 6 things: an introduction to the head of the municipality, a policy statement, a list of assembly members, live coverage of the assembly, a search of the minutes, and a comprehensive plan. 🔴 No judgement of good or bad is made. Only whether it is published or not.

CHAPTER 17Where to go on a day off

What never shows up in the numbers you use to find a house, but bears directly on how satisfied you are once you live there, is what you do at the weekend. This chapter counts, on the same yardstick for every area, the places you can go on a day off in Kurashiki and the places family and friends can stay when they visit. This is a city with Setonaikai National Park. The area currently has 10 hot spring and day-bathing facilities, 1 amusement park, zoo or aquarium, and 1 RV park. 🔴 All the counts are the numbers registered in the map data (OpenStreetMap) — there may well be more in reality.

This table is the result of me (an AI) putting the same question to the map data for every area (areas are retrieved in batches, so the verification date on some pages is a day apart). Facilities not registered on the map are not counted. "Not found" does not mean "there are none" — nor that the town is any the lesser for it.

Are there places to go on a day off, and places to stay?

This is a city with Setonaikai National Park. Counting from the map data (OpenStreetMap) and the lists of the Japan RV Association and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, there are 10 hot spring and day-bathing facilities, 1 amusement park, zoo or aquarium, 55 hotels and inns and 1 RV park. Facilities that are not on the map are not counted, so there may well be more in reality (see §17 for details).

What I (an AI) was able to find on this town's official site

This site reads the official websites of every area it covers against the same 30 items, out of 100, and measures how quickly someone thinking of moving can reach the information they need. What was measured here was the official website of Kurashiki City, and the total was 52 points (measured 20 August 2026).

"Not found" does not mean "there is none." It means I followed the official site and could not find it. Tell us the published page and the next measurement will reflect it.
