What you should know before you read this list

These 37 were retrieved after the two disastersRetrieved on 19 August 2026 — after the Reiwa 6 Noto Peninsula earthquake (1 January 2024) and the Oku-Noto torrential rain (September that year). But — whether an individual property was damaged, and whether repairs have been completed, cannot be told from this information. Across Noto, 116,519 dwellings were damaged (see the opening). Before you enquire, always ask the agent what happened to that building in the two disasters. Ishikawa Prefecture also publishes “On support towards rebuilding a home” and the collection of “Ishikawa-type recovery housing” model plans.

On how to read these figuresThis site sets towns across the country out against the same 15 headings. Noto appears in the same form, but reading Noto as it stands today as “cheap, so a good time to buy” is entirely beside the point. Speaking of Noto’s market in ordinary times: the land is large, at a median of 312 m² with 145 m² of building, and the median price ¥10,900,000. The median plot in Nakanoto and Shika is 744 m² (§2) — the largest on this site. This is information for someone who may one day think of living in Noto, while what is needed now is the “what you can do now” at the top of this page.

How cheaply can you buy a house in Noto?

SUUMO lists 37 across the nine municipalities, and all were retrieved. ¥500,000 to ¥50,000,000, median ¥10,900,000, and 🔴 a median plot of 312 square metres with 145 square metres of building — large houses. But reading this as “cheap, so a good time to buy” is beside the point.

CHAPTER 05Is the ground safe?

Read this chapter more carefully than any other page on this site. The table below is the long-term assessment published by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience. The nine Noto municipalities fall into none of the national earthquake-measure areas, and the chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years runs from 2.0% to 8.0% — among the lowest on this site. And the Reiwa 6 Noto Peninsula earthquake happened all the same.

This probability is for the single 250-metre grid square the city hall stands in. For example, Hakui City 8.0%andSuzu City 2.0% differ not because one is further from the epicentre, but because of the ground the town hall stands onis the difference (Hakui City = dune; Suzu City = sand bar and gravel bar). Within the same town it varies a great deal between the low ground and the plateau. Suzu City’s probability was 2.0%

Look at the table above again. Suzu City 2.0%. Nakanoto Town and Noto Town 3.8%. Anamizu Town 5.1%. Wajima City 6.0%. And Suzu City had 194 dead and 2,117 dwellings destroyed. Wajima City had 251 dead and 2,311 destroyed (see the opening). A low probability does not mean “it will not happen”. The J-SHIS probability is “the likelihood over 30 years, calculated from assessments of the active faults and trench-type earthquakes already known”. Faults that are not known do not enter the calculation. The Reiwa 6 Noto Peninsula earthquake was exactly such an earthquake. This site carries this figure for towns all over the country. When you read a page where the number is low, remember this page on Noto. That, we think, is the most important thing we can pass on by making it.

And a disaster does not end with the shaking

Of the 734 dead, 506 (69%) are disaster-related deaths (as of 31 July 2026). A disaster-related death, in the definition given in the prefecture’s document, is “a death from illness caused by the worsening of injuries from the disaster or by the physical strain of life as an evacuee, recognised under the Act on Condolence Grant for Disasters as a death caused by the disaster”. More people died in the life that followed as evacuees than under fallen houses in the earthquake itself — that is what these two and a half years in Noto show. How you can live afterwards decides life and death as much as whether the house is strong. Whether or not you are considering Noto, that fact is worth taking away. And Noto took a second disaster, the Oku-Noto torrential rain of September 2024. Look at the landslide and flood hazard maps separately from the earthquake, without fail.

Is the disaster risk high in Noto?

🔴 This is the most important question of all. In the J-SHIS long-term assessment the nine Noto municipalities fall into none of the national earthquake-measure areas, and the chance of shindo 6-lower or above in 30 years runs from 2.0% to 8.0% — Suzu City was only 2.0%. And the Reiwa 6 Noto Peninsula earthquake happened all the same. A low probability does not mean “it will not happen”.

CHAPTER 06What summer and winter are like

Summer nights in Noto are plainly cool. At the Wajima station, tropical nights number 3.8 a year — a fifth of Tokyo’s (17.8) and a twelfth of Nishinomiya’s (46.8). Days above 35℃ come to 1.9 a year. In exchange, the snow settles in winter (total annual snowfall 121 cm, deepest snow 27 cm). Annual rainfall is 2,162.3 mm.

Cool summer nights are a large thing to have3.8 tropical nights a year. Nowhere this site has covered has so few (Nishinomiya 46.8, Amagasaki 41.5, Toyonaka 29.6, Kurashiki 22.9). And 1.9 days above 35℃. Nights when you can sleep with the window open — that is summer here. With summer nights growing harder to sleep through everywhere in Japan, Noto’s 3.8 days is a plain thing of value.

The winter snow is a given of daily lifeTotal annual snowfall 121 cm, deepest snow 27 cm (Wajima). Nanao gets more still, at 163 cm of snowfall and 32 cm at the deepest. Nights below 0℃ come to 42.9 a year, but days that stay below freezing to 0.3 — hardly any day stays below zero. You need snow shovels and winter tyres. And January rainfall of 219.2 mm is the highest of the year — winter on the Sea of Japan side is a season of cloud, snow and rain. If you are going to look at a house, come once in winter if you can.

CHAPTER 07Shops, hospitals, schools

The information in this chapter is affected by the two disasters. Whether a facility is open, and where a school has reopened, differ from municipality to municipality. Ishikawa Prefecture keeps a list of “websites and social media of the affected municipalities”, so start there for the latest from each one.

What to look at firstIshikawa Prefecture’s “Information on the Reiwa 6 Noto Peninsula earthquake” sets out entrances by purpose: evacuation centres and life as an evacuee / for those whose homes were damaged / daily life and education / weather, road traffic and utilities (water and the rest) / on disaster victim certificates / relief donations and payments / notices for medical institutions / notices for social welfare facilities. And a list of “websites and social media of the affected municipalities”. Since the situation differs in each of the nine, going straight to the page of the one you want to live in is quickest.

On Noto in ordinary times160,180 people across nine municipalities, about 81 per square kilometre (§10). They range in size from Nanao City’s 45,390 to Anamizu Town’s 6,646, and the number of hospitals and of schools differs with each. 1,982.68 km² (§1) for 160,180 people — land where “thirty minutes by car to the next municipality” is ordinary. Whether a facility is open differs by municipality, so go straight to the one you want to live in from Ishikawa Prefecture’s list of “websites and social media of the affected municipalities”. In ordinary times they range in size from Nanao City’s 45,390 people to Anamizu Town’s 6,646.

CHAPTER 08What it costs you every year after you buy

Water and sewerage charges for the nine Noto municipalities are not given on this page. The charges differ from one municipality to another, and after the two disasters the restoration of the water supply and the waiving of charges are moving separately in each. Please check each municipality’s official pages. Instead, here are two things that will certainly cost money in this land.

① One car may not be enough1,982.68 km² for 160,180 people (§1), and no railway beyond Anamizu (§3). Shopping, medical visits and school runs are all driving distances. And the snow in winter — total annual snowfall 121 cm and deepest snow 27 cm (Wajima), 163 cm and 32 cm at Nanao (§6). Winter tyres and snow-clearing gear are not a choice but a given. With a median plot of 312 m² (§4), there is at least plenty of room to park.

② A large building costs more to keepA median building of 145 square metres (§4) — among the largest on this site. In Nakanoto and Shika it is 151 m² of building on 744 m² of land (§2). A large house costs in proportion, in heating and in roof repairs. With a Sea of Japan winter of 219.2 mm of rain in January (§6), and 15 of the 37 houses dating from 1981 or earlier (§4), always look at the insulation and the state of the roof before you buy. CHAPTER 09What happens when you want to sell

Land prices in Noto are falling. In the Reiwa 8 land price publication, residential land is ¥21,600/m² in Nanao City (−4.2%), ¥21,900/m² in Wajima City (−5.2%), ¥8,500/m² in Suzu City (−5.4%) and ¥13,000/m² in Hakui City (−4.2%). We set these figures down without hiding them.

These are figures to take honestlyAlmost every other page on this site is rising (Suita +4.9%, Nishinomiya +3.8%, Kurashiki +1.1%). All four Noto cities are falling, and by 4 to 5 per cent. This is not land to buy as an asset. Having written that plainly — Suzu City’s ¥8,500/m² is a thirty-fifth of Nishinomiya’s (¥293,500/m²). The median plot of 312 m² (§4) is possible only at these land prices. Only for someone with a clear answer to “what am I buying it for”

What the prefecture is movingIshikawa Prefecture has drawn up the “Ishikawa Prefecture creative recovery plan” and is building recovery public housing. It has also created the Noto Public-Private Recovery Centre (Notorenpuku) as a public-private base. The related-population portal “Ishikawa no Wa!” and the Noto Recovery Promotion Corps — Noto today offers stages of involvement short of “living here”. You can be involved without buying a house straight away — that may be the first way to know this land.

The space, and how few people are in itAbout 81 per square kilometre. ① A peninsula is a dead end1,982.68 km² for 160,180 people (§1, §10). There is no railway beyond Anamizu (§3), and Kanazawa to Suzu is more than 100 kilometres even in a straight line. No traffic passes through — that is what a peninsula is. Which is why a median of 312 m² of land with 145 m² of building (§4) is possible, and at the same time why land prices are low. Being a dead end makes both the quiet and the cheapness.
