Flood and landslide come on a single mapFrom the city: "The flood and landslide hazard map was prepared in September Reiwa 3 under the Flood Control Act." It sets out, on the projected inundation area map, how flood warnings are transmitted, the evacuation sites and what is needed for evacuation, and because it doubles as the landslide hazard map it carries that combined name.
🔴 The 145 listings in the city have a median elevation of 7.6 metres (3.4–50.5) (§4) — this is the plain built by the Kuzuryu, Asuwa and Hino Rivers (§1), so water is what to look at. The "projected flood inundation area maps" and "flood risk maps" for each river are published by Fukui Prefecture. Check them by address.
Tsunami, inland water and farm pondsOn tsunami the city says "the projected tsunami inundation map and the tsunami disaster warning areas are published on the Fukui Prefecture website, so please see there", and links through to the "Fukui Tsunami Hazard Map". The part of the city that meets the sea is the coast at Koshino (beyond Shimizu and the west in §2).
Separately there are also a "sewer inland-water hazard map" (for water backing up out of the sewers in heavy rain) and a "farm pond hazard map". 🔴 If you are going to live on low ground, look at the inland-water map as well as the flood map.
At the city hall site the probability within 30 years is 14.8% for intensity 6-lower or above and 2.3% for 6-upper or above. It is not designated under the Nankai Trough, the Tokyo inland, or the Japan and Chishima Trench schemes. 🔴 But the city itself writes that it was "devastated several times, including by the air raid of July Showa 20 and the great Fukui earthquake of June Showa 23". The Fukui Plain is an inland plain enclosed on three sides by mountains (§1), a landform prone to the foehn effect. 🔴 Do not expect the move to make your summers cooler. In exchange, tropical nights come to 14.0, fewer than Tokyo — the nights do cool down.

New schools are being builtThe city's list gives 46 primary and 23 lower secondary schools (counted by this site on 20 August 2026). And — Kuzuryu Lower Secondary School opened in April Reiwa 8, and Morita-higashi Primary School is due to open in April Reiwa 9.
🔴 Morita is "the north" in §2 — the belt where people are gathering, and where only 1 of 45 listings (2%) is at or under ¥10,000,000. A district where a new school is going up is a district where the number of children is rising. The city publishes primary and lower secondary catchment areas across four and two pages, so once you have an address you can tell in advance which school it feeds. The cheapest of the three Hokuriku citiesOn the same terms (20 mm pipe, 45 cubic metres over two months, water only), the three Hokuriku cities on this site line up as follows. Fukui City ¥5,186 / Toyama City ¥6,341 (the city's own worked example) / Kaga City about ¥9,542 (converted to two months, as readings there are monthly).
🔴 Fukui is the cheapest, at about half of Kaga. What does it is the setting of "¥15.4 per m³ up to 20 cubic metres", which favours households that use less.
Check property by property whether it is connected to the sewer — with a septic tank there are separate costs for upkeep and statutory inspection. Where the period of use is shorter than two months, the charge is calculated in half-month (15-day) units.
National Health Insurance tax, and the new "child and childcare support levy"The city provides a page headed "You can estimate your National Health Insurance tax", where you can enter your income and see the annual amount. 🔴 The centre of culture in Fukui City is Ichijodani.The castle town the Asakura clan ruled for five generations over 103 years survives as it was left after the fire of Tensho 1, carrying a triple national designation: Special Historic Site, Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Important Cultural Property (§1). The city also lists Yokokan Garden (a Place of Scenic Beauty), the Tangando hermitage (a Registered Tangible Cultural Property), the Osagoe Folk House Museum and the city's intangible folk cultural properties.
Ichijodani, and Yokokan GardenThe Ichijodani Asakura Family Site is, in the city's words, "an exceptionally valuable site in Japanese medieval history". A national Special Historic Site since July Showa 46, its garden a Special Place of Scenic Beauty since Heisei 3, and its excavated artefacts Important Cultural Properties since Heisei 19 — 🔴 all three national designations (§1). "The east" in §2 is the direction that leads to Ichijodani.
And Yokokan Garden (a Place of Scenic Beauty) is a stroll garden with a pond, once the villa of the Matsudaira family, lords of the Fukui domain. It is in the centre of the city. The Osagoe Folk House Museum gathers relocated old farmhouses, and the Tangando hermitage is a nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
The nature here has sea, mountain and river togetherUnder "nature, scenery and landscape" the city lists the Echizen coast, Mt. Asuwa, the Asuwa River, the Miyanoshita cosmos field, Gotaishi Falls, Lake Bushu and Chuo Park.
Mt. Asuwa and the Asuwa River are right beside the built-up area (the centre in §2). The Echizen coast lies beyond "Shimizu and the west" in §2, at Koshino (which became part of the city in the merger described in §1). 🔴 The sea, the mountains and a prefectural-capital town centre all sit within about half an hour's drive — that is the shape of this place.
The city's symbol is the phoenixOf its communication mark, the city writes: "This mark symbolises the phoenix, the symbol of Fukui City, with its wings spread. Against a background evoking the hydrangea, the flower of Fukui City, a phoenix about to take flight expresses a Fukui soaring into the future in pursuit of 'a city of kindness and vigour'." (proclaimed 3 March Heisei 4).
