Shopping in Shimonoseki runs on two legs: the markets and the big stores. Karato Market is a municipal market facing the Kanmon Strait, and on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays it fills with the general public as "Ikiiki Bakangai." Its handling of fugu (in Shimonoseki they say "fuku") is the largest in Japan. Everyday shopping means the roadside stores of the town centre, Chofu and Ozuki, and Kokura, 13 minutes by train. Trial living in Shimonoseki is free of accommodation charges and comes with an experience programme guided by a local coordinator. Two nights and three days up to four nights and five days, for 1 to 5 people. You can use it if you live outside the city and at least one of the party is under 40 (once only).
You can choose from three places to stay. "Town living" is "BRIDGE" (Takezaki-cho), a guest house converted from a former inn, 3 minutes on foot from Shimonoseki Station. "Country living" is the farm park "Minori no Oka" in Toyota-cho and the guest house "Pensione Shimado" (Hohoku-cho) near Tsunoshima.
The experience programme is not sightseeing. In town it is Karato Market, the chamber of commerce (business advice) and the city hall. In the country it is the roadside station, meeting people who have made a U-turn home, soba-making and rice harvesting, and the relocation desk. It is built to take you as far as meeting people who actually live there.
The support schemes are generous too. A relocation support payment from the Tokyo area (600,000 yen for a single person, 1,000,000 yen for a household of two or more / depending on the employment conditions, +1,000,000 yen for each household member under 18 / for starting a business, up to 3,000,000 yen combined with the prefectural subsidy). Housing acquisition support is up to 2,500,000 yen, earthquake retrofitting of a wooden house up to 1,150,000 yen, and newlywed support up to 600,000 yen when both partners are 29 or under (up to 300,000 yen when 39 or under).
